Quality Improvement (QI)

Working to enhance care quality and outcomes

Quality Improvement (QI) is a continuous, systematic approach to making healthcare safer, more effective, and more person-centred. It empowers teams to identify challenges, test new ideas, and embed changes that improve care for patients and the experience of staff.

What is Quality Improvement, and why does it matter?

In the NHS, Quality Improvement (QI) is a structured approach that helps teams identify areas where care can be enhanced, test changes on a small scale, and embed successful improvements to benefit both patients and staff. It is a practical, hands-on method that actively involves patients, carers, and staff in designing and delivering better care experiences.

At the Academy of Research and Improvement, we support teams across health and care to:

  • Understand and apply QI and research methods tailored to their specific challenges

  • Collect and analyse data to uncover opportunities and track progress

  • Co-design evidence-based solutions with patients, carers, and staff

  • Develop skills and confidence through targeted training, coaching, and shared learning

By integrating research and QI into everyday practice, we help services make informed decisions that improve outcomes, enhance patient and staff experiences, and drive sustainable, lasting change.
