About us

Working together to learn, discover and improve care

We are the Academy of Research and Improvement - a hub for research and improvement activity within Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. We support staff, patients, carers, and communities to lead and take part in research, test ideas for change, and work together to make health and care better.

We help turn questions into studies, challenges into improvements, and lived experience into meaningful insight. Whether you’re a clinician, a student, a patient, or someone with an idea - we’re here to support and enable.

Our guiding priciples

Our vision and our priorities have been developed in partnership with our patient and public involvement group Side-by-Side, alongside colleagues from around the Trust, key partners and our core team.

Our mission

To enable and inspire our staff, colleagues, patients and community members to work together to learn, discover, and improve HIOWH healthcare for everyone.

We support research that builds knowledge, improvement that drives change, and participation that puts lived experience at the heart of everything we do; actively encouraging collaboration with patients and communities at all levels of our organisation.

By building skills, confidence, and connections, we empower people to lead and learn together - for today and for the future.

Our vision

A future where research, improvement, and lived experience are embedded in everyday practice within HIOWH - driving better outcomes, stronger partnerships, and a culture of curiosity and collaboration.

We imagine a Trust where:

  • Every member of staff feels confident to improve the care or service they deliver

  • Every patient and community voice can contribute meaningfully to change

  • Research is part of daily learning, not something separate or distant

  • Innovation and co-production thrive in a culture of support and trust

Our values:

  • Equal opportunities - offering everyone the chance to contribute and innovate

  • Accountability - ensuring we are all personally and professionally responsible

  • Teamwork and collaboration - working together to create a supportive and trusting environment

  • Respect - everyone is listened to, appreciated and valued

  • Curiosity - asking questions, seeking evidence, and being open to new ideas
