My FNF Journey So Far..
Anita DeHavilland
I am honoured to have been selected for the FNF Emerging Leaders Scholarship. The scholarship brings together emerging leaders from across the NHS, to learn, collaborate and create impact. Renowned throughout the nursing community, developing responsible leaders, creating inclusive opportunities and driving innovation. I am so excited to be on this journey.
The application process is both a challenging and rewarding one. It really does push you to reflect deeply on you as a nurse and a leader, looking at the positives, and how you can support the next generation of nurses.
Did I get accepted first time I applied? Quite simply no. To get an interview is a real honour. Reach out to colleagues in your organisation who are FNF Alumni or be bold and approach your CNO for support. My advice is don’t give up, it wasn’t the right time for you and your time will come.
Leadership is never a solo journey, and I am grateful for the mentors/coaches, colleagues and friends who have encouraged me along the way.
It was inspirational meeting the scholars of 2025/26 whether they are emerging, senior or international leaders. What a wealth of experience that was present all in one room. However, it was easy for my inner critic to be incredibly vocal, what are you doing here? you don’t belong here, they have made a mistake, all increasing my imposter syndrome! It’s hard to silence that voice sometimes. You do need to turn down their volume, FNF must have seen something in me that meant I was right where I needed to be.
As part of the scholarship, I have attended a two-day leadership residential with @Hartridge. It was incredibly thought provoking, reflecting on the kind of leader I want to be, one with compassion, integrity, transparency and an active listener. It bonded us as a group, getting to know each other, supporting one another and sharing experiences and learning. We are from all different walks of life, which is amazing.
If you are curious about the scholarship, considering applying in the future, I would love to connect and share my experiences so far.
I am looking forward to what the future holds, especially with RADA coming up. Look out for my reflections on RADA…..
