Academic Support Unit

Supporting the development of research across Hampshire and Isle of Wight

The Academic Support Unit provides support to staff across Hampshire and Isle of Wight healthcare who wish to explore ideas, develop research, and generate evidence that improves care.

We aim to make research accessible to all, regardless of previous experience. Our team can assist you to refine your ideas, work with patients and communities, navigate ethics and governance processes, analyse data, and disseminate your findings.

What we do

vecteezy_hr-doodle-icons-business-recruitment-employment_13758185 [Converted]-17.png

We support people to develop an initial idea or observation to a well‑designed research study capable of informing practice.

This may involve discussing early concepts, engaging people and communities, guiding you through the different approvals that might be needed, or supporting data analysis and dissemination.

Some people approach us with a fully developed proposal; others come with only the beginnings of an idea. We welcome enquiries at any stage.

Our team brings together expertise in research design, evidence synthesis, governance, data, and study delivery, enabling us to provide comprehensive support throughout the research process.

Many research projects begin with a question or observation. We can help you develop these early ideas into clear, well‑defined research proposals.

We support you to:

  • discuss and refine your idea in a structured conversation

  • understand the feasibility and scope of your project

  • develop a researchable question

  • connect with relevant experts, including methodologists, statisticians, and PPI contributors

In practice:

You may approach us with an idea at any stage. We will work with you to shape it into a project that is achievable and methodologically sound.
