Patient and public involvement in research is critical for ensuring the research is relevant and meaningful for people affected by it, and this includes people living with dementia. In recent years, more people with dementia have become involved in the design, set-up and delivery of dementia research studies, and have acted as co-researchers working alongside academic researchers.
One of our research nurses, Caitlin, undertook a literature review for her MSc studies last year, exploring the experiences of co-researchers living with dementia. The findings showed that co-researchers with dementia felt empowered, were motivated by a desire to effect positive change, and experienced a sense of unity with others living with and affected by dementia.
